I started getting calls from an unlisted number 407-371-8021. When I picked up, nobody responded. Those calls happened three days in a row, 3-4 times a day, at varying hours. I got another one today, Friday March 5. About an hour later, I got a call from a 407-334-2537 number similar to this one - nothing on the caller ID. This time a female person spoke and asked if "Do you want to find out how to save up to 50% on your power bill?" When you hear that, look out. There was a report on a couple of Orlando's local news stations regarding scams that started with a phone call just like this. They lure folks into agreeing to this company sending someone out to their home to find out how to save alot of money on their power bills. Someone shows up, runs a bunch of checks and inspections, does a good song and dance about how good these recommendations are, how much money you will save, and so forth. Then they offer to do the work at a "good price". Once they got the homeowner hooked, they collect a good size deposit for the work to be done. Then, like the Steve Miller Band song of old - THEY TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN. They do not ever show up to do the work. The deposit is cashed in before the homeowner realizes they've been scammed.
These scammers are using computer programs to do their dirty work. The first round of calls, the ones where nobody talks, are the computers running calls to numbers that are automatically generated. If you answer once or twice, the computer notes it as an active number and when is the optimal time to call it. Then the "company representative" - the telemarketer - knows they can call that number and get an answer. I found out that they use a computer scrambler or something similar to make the calls out of, so it is impossible to trace. Plus, the computer generates different numbers to call out from every time, and they can show up as either land lines or cell lines. This makes the scammer tough, if not impossible, to track down. BEWARE OF THESE CALLS!!
