The Newest in phone technology (circa 1985), the so called "Cordless Phone" or "Cordless Handset", had proved too difficult for old lady Butterworth to confront, much less master. The harsh ringing sound of the phone summons her, as if in a trance, from her recliner to the telephone in the hall.... The exertion of rising and walking those steps showed in her quavering voice as she asked "Hello?"
The chipper, yet disembodied voice, of a person claiming to be "Emily" announced "Mrs. Butterworth, you have won the car contest! What would you rather have, a Ford Pinto or $2000 in cash?". "I'll take the money", gasped the heaving guardian of the Last Rotary Phone. "What will you do with all that money?" giggled the irrepressible Emily. "I think I will become a dope fiend", slowly whispered our matron, "What good is my life since I just missed the last 5 minutes of my favorite soapy?"
