Presumably this phone number is for a "racket" (smile) called "Credit Services" ... The rep I spoke to did give me "that tidbit" of info ... But thought I would share the entirety of the phone call for all who wish to know:  Got the same thing ... "exactly" as you state ... what gave me an "ALARM" was when the representative wanted, not only a "phone number on the back of one of MY credit cards to 'verify if I was either late or over the limit on the card'" explaining it was part of his verification process for eligiblity for the "program" to reduce interest on ALL of my credit cards, ... BUT WHEN HE ASKED FOR THE "16 DIGIT ACCOUNT NUMBER ON THE FACE OF THE CARD" ... the alarm went off ... big time!!   Ironic that when I told him I wanted to "discuss it with my husband" before proceeding, he had the audacity to call me back on a return phone call to find out if it was a "go"!  Tis a shame!! I'm sure I'm not the only one that would like interest rates to drop on "all" my credit cards ... but certainly not at the risk of identity theft.  The other interesting point is that when I told him I wasn't about to give my account number out over the phone ... he tried to "assure me" that there was "absolutely no way he could simply get on the phone and use my card for a credit card purchase" !!   My response to him was "haven't you heard about identity theft?"  And again, he "smiled" assuring me he was "legit" ...
