I got the same call today & when I responded there was a recording saying that I had just won a free to the Bahamas that all I had to do was to complete a survey. I immediately hung up knowing that this was a scam. It was a number from Los Gatos.
I received multiple calls from this number. Says his name is Thomas and wants me to know I can win a trip to the Carribean and WILL GET a trip for two to either San Diego or Las Vegas just for showing up and listening to the schpeil for a 90 minutes. Sounded pretty typical of this type of marketing BS. as Scams go they seem to avoid the full force of the law by giving SOME form of consideration (e.g. quid pro quo). Problem is that they are looking for a great deal of information over the phone and of course while detailed personal info it's all "very routine." People have to make a living and this technique has been around a long time. I've even known some folks to take their free trip and have fun with it. Not 5-star to be sure. maybe nothing at all.
Trick I use is to ask them for their personal information explaining I want to know who I'm giving info to. They usually take my number off their list at that point. the reason so many don't get a reply is they use an auto dialer and it waits to hear an answer before alerting them a "live one" is on the line. I know many who go and listen to the sales pitch (usually time share, but they now claim it's something else) and take the free airfare and hotel stay. don't give out your real name or address over the phone, ever. they will say it's the only way you can collect your award and airfare. Tell them, you'll give it for the airline ticket after their sales pitch in exchange for some collateral (like their home address and the name of their spouse and her maiden name). Once they've proven to you they are legit, then decide if you want to hang at a hotel in San Diego that's a mere 4 miles from the beach. But hey, San Diego is worthy of 90 minutes.
