I believe these collection agencies use our local phone numbers to increase the chance that people will pick up. Better Business Bureau shows something like 1186 complaints. I used a different phone to make the call back to see who they are. If you call that number, you get an automated answer that says they are ERC, then they ask you to select 4 different options. The first one is to make a payment. Just hang up. Don't enter anything...not even the last entry number 4 that says "If you've reached this number by mistake, press number 4...just hang up. In fact, I never, ever pick up a call on my home phone on any phone number I don't recognize. I get 1 or 2, sometime more, each day. It used to be a lot more but since I got "caller id" several years ago and can now see the number calling, I just look the numbers up on the computer. Can't always find out who is calling that way but can usually get a pretty good idea. I find 800notes is about the very best web site to find information. All the others want you to open an account and for you to pay money...and there is no guarantee that you'll get any real information. In fact, some of those web sites even use fake names and other information. I think that those web sites are scams just about as bad as the scammers who call. I suspect that even with this web site, my online identity may be used. I hope it is not being sold to scammers. That's the risk you take by going online and enabling scripts, I guess. Until our law enforcement cracks down on these bums even more than they have, we will have to put up with the annoyances by scammers. You can buy phone equipment, beside the caller id, to block even the ring but the allotted memory on those devices would soon fill up and you will still get calls. I write down the numbers on paper that I've saved over the years and I've got many pages full of those numbers and most are scammers...collection agencies...etc. I don't owe anyone anything and haven't for many years. By the way, for those that do...there is a limit of liability...a statute of limitations of something like 6 or 7 years.There is no law that says you have to answer your phone or even be home. Most of these bums are fishing for information that they can use against you. They'll keep bugging the hell out of you even many years after that time is up. But if you ever answer one of those calls and they get you to say that you will pay them...then that resets the 6 or 7 year legal liability all over again. That's why you should never even pick up...or if you do...never...ever give them any information. That would be very stupid. Just hang up and don't admit that they even got the right number. By the way, getting a new telephone number will get you even more headaches. The previous owner may have owed a lot of people and you will just get plagued with more calls. I believe that is what happened in my case...they are most likely looking for whoever owned my telephone number when I got it years ago trying to avoid these calls...it didn't work. Called ID is about the only defense. I am not a lawyer and this information I have given is only my opinion. But, it has worked for me!
