Claiimed to be a sheriff from Maryland, once I told them I had no idea what they were talking about. They stated that I add to be in court monday morning at 9am in downtown Maryland. I live in Indiana, but I asked him to wait out front for me, and he hung up.
What is it with these crooks that they seem to have to use a Famous TV personality or known Character from a TV show? Although I've no doubt that there's more then one person with like name, it seems to be a real love of using the TV shows. Think I've seen at least 3 Special Agent GIbbs in the posts.. one even saying from CSI! <guessing they don't know their shows very well either>
Got a call from phone number 410-246-5303 posing as folks from federal crime dept, telling us that we owe money to IRS and unless paid in the next hour via green money pak that is sold in Rite Aid or Radio Shack, I will be arrested. He told us that he had no other choice than to go ahead with it if the money failed to reach treasury within an hour. For some reason it did not look or sound right to me. But I still went to Rite Aid to check it out. The lady who tried to help me, also did not agree with the nature of the call. I thought about it and he called again to check on status. By then I was convinced it was a scam and told him that I was not paying, and he could do whatever he wanted. He yelled back saying - go spend the night in jail as officers will be taking me in , in another 30 minutes. This was so clear to me that it was a full fledged scam.
This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam a year ago:
They are getting to my nerves - there have been at least a dozen calls. Nowadays they call from anonymous numbers but since they want to scam me, they still need me to call back at 410-246-5303
Hope the FBI traces back to these numbers and jail them for menacing society
