is a "vishing" scam that uses VoIP to hijack phone numbers and call all over the U.S. In this case, someone calls saying they want to update your listing in business Yellow pages. Do not call registry does nothing to prevent these calls because they are hackers to begin with. When you call back this number, during the day you get a rapid busy signal. When you call after business hours, you get the "the number you have called is disconnected." Verizon Maryland won't do anything because it is listed as disconnected in their books. My carrier, AT&T doesn't do anything about nuisance calls. Police department can't track these down because they are hacking into the number in the first place. Best defense? Keep a loud safety whistle by the phone and USE IT!!!!! Scam artists/Hackers deserve ruptured eardrums.
They called NINE times in a row without stopping yesterday. They ask me to update our "Free listing with AT&T yellow pages". When I say I am not authorized, they say anyone at the company can verify the address for them. When I decided to play along and verify the address they asked my job title, and when I told them Administrative assistant, they said that they needed me to say owner or manager...uh, yeah. I thought I could be anyone??? Then they tried to bill me for the "free listing" and when I called they did take it right off the bill, but they still call at least three times a day, from Maryland, Oregon, Washington, etc. When I hang up on them, they immediately call back, and I have to answer, because I am in customer service, so I can't ignore a potential customer. It is getting really old. There's really nothing we can do about this???
Called me today, and someone who could barely speak English said that he was was calling about my free listing with ?? yellow pages (could hardly understand) and he needed to check my info. I told him that I the owner wasn't here and she asked me not to give out any information. He proceeded to tell me again that he just needed some info, and when I tried again to explain, he kept interrupting, until I got very loud, and said "If you don't listen to me I am just going to hang up!" I told him again, I wasn't to give any info out, and just hung up on him. Although, I am the owner, I hate these calls, and especially when they don't listen to me in the first place. I refuse to deal with them.
