SCAM!!! SCAM!!! SCAM!!! SCAM!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!! WARNING!!!
These people called me today. The guy said he was calling from Baker and McKenzie Law Firm. He then asked if he was speaking to ______ and gave my name. I said yes. He then said that there had been a lawsuit filed against me and asked if I was aware of it. To which I responded, no! He went further to say that he represented Instant Cash, a payday loan company, and that they were going to prosecute me for check fraud, some federal crime about the Internet, and theft by taking. But that I could settle out of court and avoid prosecution. I told him that I had never had a payday loan. He then gave me my name, address, social security number, name of my bank and account number. He said that if I didn't settle out of court that he would have federal agents, local sheriff's deputies and attorneys from their firm show up at my house or place of business. I told him to send them on and I would have a pot of coffee ready when they got here. This is a HUGE SCAM!!! Don't fall for it!! I went to my local sheriffs office and spoke to a detective and she actually called them. When she started asking questions, they hung up on her too. I noe have a flag on my credit reports and a flag on my checking account since I know they have my information. I knew better than to fall for their crap but thought I would share my story so no one else gets scammed.
I got a call from a "Richard Anderson" and Baker & McKenzie Law Firm. He started his spiel about lawsuits and being arrested and so forth because of fraud on a pay day loan. When I started asking questions, he got ugly and told me to shut up. I told him I would not shut up as I have every right to know. He hung up on me. I got a similar call last week from another number, same story. When the [***] said "you'll be arrested tomorrow", I replied with "well how about I go to my police station right now and sit down with the Chief of Police. I know him personally, and I'm sure we can get this arrest b*llshi*t straightened out." To which the nut job replied "You're a stupid b*tch and don't call me asking for help". OK.
Don't worry about these idiots. Just take the number, the name they give you, the name of the law firm they give you and report it all to the FTC and your State Attorney General. Maybe even local police, sheriff or state law enforcement offices. They should all have fraud divisions. Also, say "please hold a moment" give it about a minute and come back on the line with "this call is now being recorded". ESPECIALLY if they call you at work.
