They said they were a "firemen's association" and wanted to thank me for my past donations. I've never donated to any firemen's association over the phone or given any firemen's association my phone numbers or other information.
I picked up and he said that he was calling from a fireman's association. I told him I already support my local fire department and he went right into his fund raising plea. I had to almost hang up on him to get off the phone.
Received call several times. Did not answer. Caller ID said JAK and I don't answer calls if I don't know the caller. I am on Federal and State "do not call" list. Doesn't seem to help much.
Unfortunately charities are exempt from the DO NOT CALL lists. These fire company solicitors keep about 85% of what they convince you to donate - so they are aggressive.
*Never* give donations to a stranger who calls you. Might be a scammer. Might be a legit independent fund raiser who keeps 90% for themselves and sends 10% to the charity. Best to find what charity they are collecting for, research the charity to make sure it's legit, get charity contact info from an independent source, then donate *directly* to the charity so they will get 100% of your donation.
