They are literally scamming Billions (yes with a B) from Americans. Thankfully you did not fall for this.

If you feel you SSN has been compromised, in addition to putting a fraud alert at the 3 credit bureaus, you may want to notify the IRS. Here is the link, fill out the proper form (probably 14039):

They called and said I was going to be arrested in 24 hrs for back taxes form 2008-2013. I don't owe any taxes I could go to Walmart and transfer money and then be set up on a payment plan to stop any proceedings against me. . They wanted 2000 at first but would take 500. The said they were from the United States Treasury Department. I didn't give them any money but they asked me be ready to be arrested. Pretty scary though. Had my name and address but that was all.
