There is a widespread IRS or "tax scam" being practiced by scammers on both Canadian and USA residents.
USA tax payers should read this:

Short answer:
The IRS never initiates a contact via phone.
They always send a snailmail first.

This scam is also described as scam #11, here:

received message from "Officer Nikki Johnson" from IRS. Called the real IRS 800 number. My record is spotless and no one from IRS called me. From reading the other posts, Nikki Johnson sure has a lot of phone numbers. Don't fall for it. If you aren't sure, call the REAL IRS phone number and they will help you.
Yep. Nikki Johnson the robot voice called me too claiming to be from the IRS. I was instructed to call before any action against me was taken. I didn't return "her" call.
Just same message. Obviously a scam. I left "her" a voicemail telling her the Nigerian Princes can still be saved. We just need to sacrifice "Nicki" first.
I received a phone call on my cell phone (which IRS does not have) with the same message, How odd that this morning on KSF0 560 Katy Green would tell the radio listeners that if you type in a number in Google postings from others will give you an idea if the call is legit or not.
