This number is appearing on my caller I.D. about 6x's a day, so this morning I answered and some foreign dude was like we're calling to finish up your application for the home security system,  I'm like dude, are you serious you don't even know my name, his response was that's Why I'm calling to finish the application,  such an  a-hole, I kept telling him to remove my number, he hung up, but called back 10 minutes later, I didn't answer

I had a call from them too a couple of hours ago.  Several sites list the number having a negative rating.  Most of them mention calls regarding the sales of alarm systems.   This number itself is spoofed as it is what is called a Voice Over IP (VOIP) number.  Originally it shows up on Caller ID with a V followed by several numbers and then translates to the number in which we are all having a problem with.   These are associated with telemarketers and have their computerized phone system using V-Dial (http://www.vccs.ca/docs/VDial-Product-Brochure.pdf) to generate this V# and then a phone number which states if you want to find out for your eligibility for a free home security system.   If you call the number, option 1 lets you get more information and option 2 puts you on a Do Not Call list.

As an example, the call I received was from:
V908174617002566 = 1-415-363-9629
The 1st 3 numbers after the V is date:                                           0908 = Sept 08
The next 3 numbers is the time (EST):             1                            74617 = 5:46pm 17 sec
The last numbers is the campaign or identifier for the marketer:   002566

Normally those calls are a result of giving your phone number to a business and that business shares that number (whether your name is associated or not) to marketing companies.

Putting your number on a do not call list only delays the inevitable and does not stop calls from political, law enforcement or fire department entities.

The way of the future may be getting your own virtual number.  This may prevent unwanted calls and keeps your actual phone number safe and confidential.   I'm considering it myself.  Not sure of the cost, but I just started my research.
