Called my wife's phone, a little while later called my phone. Showed Mt. Gilead, Ohio, don't know anyone there, but I'm in Ohio now, so I wonder if I asked for their address so I could swing by and we could sit down and discuss the terms if they would comply and entertain me?
Prerecord call to cell phone on DNC. Wanted to help me reduce/forgive my student loan debt. Made up some numbers and (surprise!) I qualified for the program. All they needed was my username/password at studentaid.ed.gov so they could review my student loan information. They weren't from the government, but claimed to be working for the government for this program. Tried to get to a "loan consultant", but they wouldn't transfer me until I gave them my user/pass to verify my account. Having gotten these calls before, I knew they guy would check to see if it worked, and obviously I'm not going to him a real one, or sign up fraudulently for a joke account on a gov web site. So he eventually hung up on me.
I've emailed a couple of Federal agenecies, including DOE on this scam, hoping they'd put a "Warning: Fraud" alert on their web site about this sort of thing, but none of the responses seemed to indicate any care, or "it's not our [dept]'s job, it's the [dept]'s job". At least the FTC cares a little bit.
Did manage to keep the scammer on the phone for about 16 minutes, though.
Student loan scam:
Form you that your student loan has been flagged as eligible to receive loan forgiveness and payment reduction of up to 60% as part of the new student debt forgiveness Act just passed by congress if you have more than $7,000 in federal student loans press 1 now to check your eligibility and be connected to a live counselor or press 5 now to decline this offer and be taken off our list.
When I was away from my phone, I received a phone call from one Ohio number, & then 8 minutes later, got a call from another Ohio number. I couldn't answer either of them if I wanted to, but I found it suspicious that they called me 8 minutes apart.
Both numbers have complaints about being scam/spam phone calls.
People complaining about calls from this number may want to pre-emptively also block 513-725-0858.
