A lady named Bonnie called me from this number this morning and told me she was taking a survey. I figured, why not, so I took it. She said she appreciated my time and was going to send a few free magazines. All I gave her was my name and address, then she switched me over to another guy, who asked me for my birthday. I asked him some questions about the company and he told me it was based in Logan, Utah. He told me I had committed to pay $4.99/week for 60 months for some weekly magazines. I told him I had done no such thing, that the lady said I was getting a few free magazines. He told me their company was in connection with VISA and he had all of my credit card information already and I had committed to the subscription. He argued with me for a couple minutes and I hung up. It was quite nerve-racking. I just looked up the phone number and it says it's in Chattanooga, Tennessee. It's most definitely a scam and NEEDS TO BE STOPPED!! I'm not sure what to do about it from here though. I plan on checking my credit card balance regularly over the next few weeks to make sure they don't steal any money from me.
Famous last words ... "why not". Now you KNOW why not. No stranger who invades your privacy on your phone is going to do you any favors and will likely do more harm than good. Now you know. Don't answer questions, especially personal questions that can be used for identity theft like your birthday, and NEVER give out credit card or bank account info. Never. No matter how nice they seem to be, they're not nice or they wouldn't be doing this kind of work!
And if you gave your credit card number to these crooks, you should get the account cancelled and have your bank issue you a new account, don't wait for these crooks to drain it.
Yeah, now I know. What kind of damage could they do with a name, address, and birthday? I didn't give them any credit card info...but I didn't give them my phone number in the first place either. I tried calling them back, but the number wouldn't work. Do you have any advice for what I should do?
It is a SCAM, however the callers usually get paid for every call ANSWERED and the length of the call. They are also scamming their employers. They find numbers that go to voice mail and play music or do dead silence. Usual time for a voice mail is bout 1 minute so they are making money. They know which numbers pick up, hang up, answer or keep ringing and use that information. Try hanging up on them every time you call and they usually stop. However, sometimes they have people that actually are trying to pull the scam. IT IS A SCAM, THEY WANT YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION AND MAY EVEN HAVE SOME OF YOUR INFO ALREADY SUCH AS YOUR NAME!!! Sometimes they say you won a prize but usually ask you a few "Survey" questions which gives them personal information to help them steal your identity. DO NOT GIVE THEM ANYTHING! DO NOT TRUST THEM!!! 42393370064 Keeps calling 3-5 times a day. They also use different 866 and 877 numbers as well. I think it's the same people! Sometimes I don't answer, other times I hang up on them. I have already advised them that I am on the Federal Do Not Call Registry and they are violating Federal Law, to stop calling. That hasn't stopped them. They know the law is a joke and the Feds don't have the brass to enforce anything. A private citizen can be arrested for non stop calling (it's called harassment,) but these companies can keep doing it over and over and nothing can be done. This country really is going down the toilet!
