The call was a "robo-call" at 7:45AM. Voice said that they were the IRS. Stated that this was the last attempt to contact and that the IRS was going forward with the lawsuit. The call was "urgent". Asked that we call them back as "425-296-1450" immediately.
I live with my mother full time. I answered the phone because my mother doesn't hear on the phone. I called back in the expected panic. Started to remember the warnings on the local news about this "scam" from March. The fellow that answered claimed his name was Officer Jacob Black, badge number "IRM714", in the Legal Department. He asked if he was talking to "P_ _ _ W_ _ _ _". I let him assume so. He spoke with an accent that was probably northern European. I asked what this was about. He tried to get me to tell him how he could help me. I replied that I received a call from this number. He told me that he was calling to inform me that the IRS was suing me. I asked "why?". He then told me that I had not paid taxes that I owed from the year 2008 and 2013. By this time I was remembering more of the information regarding this particular scam. I told him that I needed to verify that he was from the IRS. He repeated his badge number. I asked if he could tell me my Social Security Number. He said that he was not allowed to discuss that on the phone. His mood and attitude was demanding and angry. I asked where he was calling from. He replied "Washington D.C."
Ultimately I told him that the IRS never contacted people by telephoned. That I was aware that they only used the U.S. Postal Service. This man tried to tell me again that this call was being made as a courtesy to me. I laughed and hung up the phone.
I don't feel like laughing, however. They intend to frighten people. They startle us with the early morning phone call, and the drastic message. I am truly angered by all this. What if my mother had answered the phone. She would have been terrified.
