They keep calling home and cell phones. When we answer, there is no one there and they leave no message. When you call back, the number is either busy or there is no answer and it rings off the hook

My call--a few minutes ago (10-9-11 @ 1310) on Caller ID read "Unknown" from 443-420-0180--asked for me or my wife ("May I speak to Mr. or Mrs. ****** ****** " ? My answer: "This is Mr. ****** ". Solocitor's spiel: I represent the Disable Policeman's Association. How are you today? My answer: "I am fine! But I don't have anything to contribute. Please don't call again". And without waiting for a reply--I hung up! While that may not stop future calls--it gave me some satisfaction to tell the paid solicitor to (in so many words) to [***]!!
You should know that these people are paid to make these calls--either salaried or by commission. And the calls may continue to come with different combinations of the basic number--with the last 2 or 4 digits changed. And they'll be just as pleased by getting personal information from you--such as your address social security number--what bank you do business with etc. They'll sell that information--a very profitable business--to other telemarketers and businesses that operate through phone calls or the Internet. Never give them any personal information. Deny that you are who they think they are calling--even though you are. Or tell them that you (without identfying yourself) represent the party they are calling--who is DEAD! How do they know? They may have simply gotten your phone number from the telephone directory--or another telemarketer. If you'd rather not speak to them--at all--let the answering service deal with it and make note of the [obscure] name and number given on your Caller ID.
