John called me yesterday and gave me a number to call for information on a civil complaint supposedly being filed against me and when i called they started talking about something i owed over 3 years ago that i have totally forgotten about. They eventually set me up with a great opportunity to settle it with a one time payment. They were very professional and provided me with all the proper information that proved everything they were telling me to be true. I owed them so its only fair i pay my debt. That's how i see it at least.
No, you see, shills like you never get it right. Per the FDCPA, you should not pay any caller unless they MAIL - do not accept email or fax - proof of debt/proof your caller has the legal right to collect said debt. Refusal to mail this documentation within five days of their initial contact with you is a violation of federal law. As is misrepresenting yourself as a process server. Mailing that documentation isn't optional - it's required.
