I got this call and they were soliciting for money for breast cancer. I asked how they got my number and said it was sold to them to call. She gave me a 1800 number to call to find out more information. I was even asked to commit to sending money and I said no. I'm annoyed that my number is unlisted and someone is getting my information. She even called me by my first and last name.
Do remember, however, that these folks may well be legitimate. The "do not call" list does NOT apply to 501(c)3 charities, government agencies, educational institutions, etc. It also does not apply if a person has shown interest in a company's services, so if you have called for information in the past, then the company can call you now to see if you still have an interest in a mortgage or whatever.
Likewise, unlisted and unpublished numbers have their limitations. An unpublished number simply doesn't appear in the telephone directory issued by the telephone company. And an unlisted number is both not listed in the directory and not given out by Directory Assistance. On-line directories are compiled from many sources, not just telephone directories; it's hard to prevent your name and number from appearing. And if it's on-line, then people will have access.
Unfortunately, all these categories were established before the Internet became the primary source of information for most people. It's probably time for some new regulations, although there will be a lot of objections from businesses, charities, and so on.
Correct.. however they can still get into trouble if they do not remove you when asked to do so and place you on their internal DNC lists. And just a FYI in regards to legit business's, the laws changed in Oct of last year. They are allowed one phone call.. Also charities are not exempt from calling in Oregon.
