We have exactly the same situation with her. She said a lien would be placed on the home--knew our mortgage companies. We also had a credit counseling program. She gave us a fake court case number and said she had sent a letter--when I told her to send a certified one and that the court number was fake she got mad and hung up!
CRS, Collection Recovery Services. Brian had left a message that this was a legal matter, not collections. When I called he did not identify his company went straight into a spiel how there was a judgment against me and a lien could be put against my home, but he could stop this if I paid half... I kept asking questions, as in mainly what are you talking about? He gave me two different bank names, that I either had a loan or a credit card. Finally he gave me the name of his company, and still denied three times it was a collection company before admitting I was "technically" right, but it wasn't that dept. Yet, he was wanting money... His manager got on the phone, gave me yet ANOTHER bank name. She ended up threatening me that a 1099C would be filed against me, how I would remember this day when I was offered to settle for much less than owing $6k the courts are going to make me pay.
Neither bothered to verify they were indeed speaking to the correct party; no asking me my full name, address, last four of SSN, DOB, etc... Best of all, it came out that this is a FOURTEEN year old debt. SOL is loooong past. I know they can still attempt to collect on such, but attempting such threats?! It's really laughable. This was my FIRST contact with these people. I've no idea of any such debt, I was familiar by name only with just one of the banks they mentioned. And, after finding out it was something that old, I quit trying to rack my brain and make sense of the whole thing.
We too have been getting phone calls from this same number basically stating the same stuff. The lady that keeps calling us won't give out her first name. She calls herself "Ms. Altman". Today she called my husbands place of employment and asked for him, when the receptionist said he wasn't there she hung up. Literally 30 seconds later Ms. Altman called back and threatened to send a sheriff out "to get him" and hung up on the receptionist when she asked what is the matter she was calling about. He called her back and she said she didn't make any such threat, what she was saying is that she would have a sheriff serve papers and that she's already received permission from our mortgage company to place a lien. Definitely not what she said! We keep asking them to send us paperwork showing we owe money. And she goes on to say that we need to send proof stating we don't.
My thought... if you want MY money... show ME proof I owe it. This is probably the 4th call we have received from this number since about June....
We had the same problem with a Ms. Altman who called and said we had a $10,000 debt from Wells Fargo and both our mortgage companies were going to put a lien on our property. We had a court date set for tomorrow. She gave me the court case number which was a phony. I think this company hacked into a credit counseling company's records and saw we had paid down our bills and got the info from those records. Do NOT pay anything until you see proof in writing.
