received a call from this number stating that she was Mrs. Washington stating she had paper work on her desk regarding fraudulent check writing I spoke with my bank they advise me this was a scam people trying to get money and scare people.
Got a message from a Ms. Washington who stated she had received paperwork regarding fraudulent check writing. I called back and she stated it was from a payday loan and became IRATE when I stated I had never had a payday loan, not do I use checks at all, and said she was going to file the paperwork with the county check fraud department & hung up on me. I called back & she hung up on me again all without giving me ANY information as to what all this is about.
Garden variety "you've written a bad check and I have a complaint on my desk" scam. Writing fraudulent checks is a crime. If you had written such a check, the BANK would have notified you in writing. Usually the bank will try to work out something and that's the end of it. But if the bank wanted to, it could make a complaint to the local police. Fraudulent check writing would be a matter for local prosecutors. You would NOT get the news by a cold-call from a scammy debt collector.
This a just a group of white collar criminals that go around trying to scare money out of people. Ignore them and block their calls. This scam has been around for a while. Don't fall for it. There is no county check department in most states. Some states have prosecutors that handle just those kinds of crimes. But this is a scam.
