You are right, Advocate. IRS does NOT call people first unless they have first sent a LETTER confirming they will call. Don't be victimized, ppl. No one reaches out personally to 'help' you with taxes. YOU have to seek that out on your own at LICENSED PROFESSIONAL Brick & Mortar Locations. Be Safe. There are no shortcuts!
Got this call today. Intercepted call at third ring; picked up SILENTLY. Dead Air of a ROBOCALL which I expected since CID said "TAX RELIEF CENTER." Knew it was a SCAM: robocalls are ILLEGAL; only CRIMINALS use these now. BLOCKED.
They have your number because they buy lists of 'live' numbers from a variety of sources. This is a SCAM. Neither the IRS nor legit tax help firms Cold Call you because that is ILLEGAL. These SCAMMERS are attempting to steal your identity so they can file a FRAUDULENT tax refund in your name with your SS# to steal your own refund from you. This is a BIG problem right now. NEVER give out ANY info to a Stranger who Cold Calls you even if the name on the Caller ID seems 'legit' because that can be SPOOFED. If you must answer (better if you don't) tell them YOU will call THEM back. If you think there is a valid reason to call THEM, always find a VALID number online or in the phone book and call that party yourself, if you think that its a legit reason/call. (Don't use the number they called you on or even take a call-back number from them over the phone; could still be a scam.)
