Solon-based debt collector National Enterprise Systems, better known as NES, will pay $414,000 to settle state charges it harassed consumers, in violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
Ohio Attorney General Richard Cordray sued the company last year, alleging that it violated federal and state consumer law by, among other things:
* harassing consumers by calling them repeatedly within a short time.
* failing to remove phone numbers from an account after it learned the number wasn't associated with the debtor.
* failing to send proof of the debt after consumers requested it.
* withdrawing money from people's accounts without authorization.
* continuing to try to collect full debts from consumers after agreeing to lower settlements.
