I live in Sacramento, CA (916) and have received several calls from this number over the past 24 hours, one at 3:18AM! The phone rings once or twice and hangs up. Calls like these are usually from hackers. They program their computers to call every number within an area code and its prefixes. You'd be surprised at how much information can be gleaned just from ringing a phone number . . . its location, landline or mobile, computer, fax, voice, the fact that it's a working number, any name transmitted with the caller id, the carrier, as well as characteristics of the connection. Some hackers sell the information they have collected to companies like Intellius, credit bureaus, collection agencies, insurance companies, law enforcement, governments, intelligence agencies, etc. They cross reference the information with existing databases. Haven't you ever wondered how people manage to obtain an unlisted phone numbers or cell numbers? There are no public databases of cell phone numbers. And, there's really nothing you can do to stop activity like this . . .
