503.389.4125 Magic Jack generic outbound number for greater Portland, Oregon.
Sit down, hold on and learn how this number works:
Whaaat? Yup, it could be anybody who uses MagicJack as their VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) phone. That's why it's favoured by scammers. It's cheap and incognito. Also, it can look like a local call.
But it also could be your buddy in (insert city name here) who happens to use MJ - though less likely.
I use the MJ app on my iPad to make free calls by VoIP, and I always have to remember that it's going to look like some scammer is calling. If I call my friend in Palm Springs, it shows up on her caller ID as a number in nearby Indian Wells. My pal in Seattle sees a Florida number for some reason...
Anyhoo... It could be anyone, but likely not someone you want to talk to - so I'd advise ignoring it unless you're actually expecting a call from a MJ user. (And then it still might not be them...)
As for the calling back to establish a link, that's true. Once that's done, the non-MJ user can call back to the VoIP number and be answered on their iPad, iPhone, computer or whatever, which is fine if it's a friend, but if it wasn't your buddy calling, don't do that.
OBTW, all this applies for Skype, and probably most other VoIP services as well, but using different numbers, of course. Confusing? yup, welcome to the internets...
The voice message left said they were a magic jack customer and I needed to receive a call from this number first before I could call it. Sounds super-scammy.
Received from 503-389-4125: Calls at 1) 9:07pm July 28... (talked to man insisting he was contacting me about a 6.5 MILLION dollar prize and a Mercedes Benz I had won... (Yeah, right!) . Call came in from "North Plains Oregon..supposedly.. kept breaking up so he gave me another number to call in OHIO...and he answered that phone as well! Insisted he was with an Affilate of Publisher's Clearing House and I had won this huge prize and would not have to pay any taxes on it.... All I had to do was.... BUY A GREEN DOT money pack/paypal/scratch card from the local Walmart or Walgreens or other drugstore and then call back.. Cost? $500!!!! and he wanted me to do it RIGHT AWAY so he could deliver my prize (and what color mercedes do you want , hon?) yeah. Really scam artist.. wanted personal info...The card see...would allow a direct payment to ...HIM no doubt..and then that would be likely the last I would hear of any prize! I told him I had read on the internet of Green Dot money pack scams in Arizona (did checking while talking to him)..and he had indeed told me when I asked the name of his company that it was MegaMillions.. (Turns out that was the name associated with the scam in Arizona)..
2)second call from him was next morning July 29 at 4:12 AM , waking me up ...probably thinking this old lady would be more likely to buy his story if groggy from lack of sleep! I told him he must be calling fromout of state (not north plains, oregon) because of the time difference.. He said he needed to call me in the morning to make sure I had my card in time for him to deliver my mercedes etc at 8am..> I told him no.
3)third call was an hour later on July 29 at 5:12 AM... It was him/same number on the caller id . I did not answer.
4) fourth call was July 29 at 4:29pm.. It was him again..
This is a scam, targeting "seniors" with offers of millions of dollars and a car.. He also offered to pay off all my credit card debt .. I was not interested in giving him the credit card numbers !!!! nor my bank account. Eerily, he already had my birth date.. so likely he bought the info from someone who puts together lists of likely targets to scam based on some data base.
This guy is a scam artist for sure. He uses smooth talk to try to lull you into complacency. He has a slight foreign accent, but the name he uses is very American. Watch out. He has an answer for everything, but he is out to steal from you. Be warned!
