Of course, you could play with them, and call back giving them an address...how about your local police department? And tell them that's what it is.
No, no, resist the temptation. My favorite weapon is the old metal coach's whistle; it hangs off the lamp switch right by the phone. I got exactly one call like this, gave 'em a blast. Never heard from them again.
Got a call from an "Eric Kogan", transcript follows:
------------
This message is for "(My name in a computer voice)". My name is ERIC KOGAN. I'm calling about a fax order I received in my office.
I have some legal documents in hand that I need to serve you with, and I was calling to schedule a place and time that we could meet. However, since I was unable to reach you by phone, I will be actively trying to serve these documents to you at either your place of employment or residence.
If you have any questions in regards to your summons, you may still contact the plaintiff at 888-574-9497 and refer to case number (a case number followed by my computer name). You have officially been notified.
----------
This phone number is in Oregon, I live on the East coast, so they're WAY out of jurisdiction. However, the number they tell me to call is for "Abbot, Newman and Associates". A quick google search turns out that the lawyer (Abbot) has been disbarred in my state, and that they are debt collectors who use these tactics.
It's illegal to do ANYTHING at my place of residence, and also the FCDPA requires that they would have to have notified me in writing before serving me with anything. I've seen a lot of complaints online from dozens of different phone numbers, all using this tactic and all with invalid ancient or nonexistent debts.
Beware of these people. I'm not even sure I should call them to find out what they THINK I owe, as any contact could be a validation of their ridiculous claims.
I meant "place of employment", not "place of residence". I was irked when typing that post. Regardless, these people are terrible. Many posts report that they have sworn at the people answering the phone, told them lies like "you're going to jail" or "you're in a lot of trouble, you owe a lot of money, the police will come for you".
Total scammers, in complete violation of every facet of the FCDPA.
Got the same message as Just A Guy reported, verbatim. In fact, each time I said "hello" the message would start over. Do NOT give these people any info, they are scammers and liars. They do not represent a real law firm, even, they just want you to think they do. In Texas, the lying they did in their recorded message is illegal, AND I am contacting the Attorney General here in Texas.

I actually called them back, it was from a card debt thats from 2003 and was written off they tried to say that I made payments in 2007. They flat out lied, plus they said they can only negotiate a settlment up until I get served, I asked them what address they will be serving me at as I've moved several times, the guys said he doesn't have access to that info. I'm gonna let it roll and see what happens. Dont have any property to put a lien on or money to pay any debt. NOt to mention I haven't seen anything on this particular debt for over 4 years. Don't make any payments to them, I think they are full of it!!!
