Because the caller ID listed the number, and I recognized 505 as ABQ's area code, I answered. The man (not Hispanic) asked if he could speak to John (my husband). Since that informality is decidedly unprofessional, I asked icily, "Who's calling, please?"
Answer: "Matthew. May I speak to John please?"
Me, getting steadily even icier: "What company do you represent?"
Matthew: "Who am I speaking to?"
That did it. Realizing I'd not get any information out of him, I paused then said: "No, you may not [speak to him]."
And I promptly hung up.
I'm sure this is not a representative of Citibank (we do not bank there nor have a credit card with them), but my question is, how do we get to Citibank and get this guy and his cohorts stopped? "Suspicious" in the post above, said he'd look into it further, but where? How? To whom?
Received a call from Matthew at Citibank who asked my wife if she knew Carlos (Hispanic last name?). He had given her as a reference. She told the guy no, she does not know that person. I called back and asked Matthew what his last name was; why he called and which Citibank Branch he work for? He would not give a last name, said he did not have to and would not give the Branch. I asked why he was calling New Jersey from Albuqurque, New Mexico (the Caller ID indicated Citibank Citicorp). His accent was Hispanic and he asked who I was. I told him he appeared to be some kind of phone scam and I would look into his call further, then hung up.
