First I received an e-mail from a Head-Hunter about a job position for an on-line interview. I did the on-line interview and I was offered a position. I accepted. I should have been suspicious when I received an Employment Offer Letter the next day and it only had a Fax Number, no actual phone number. All communication was via Yahoo Messenger. The company is based in CA, I received a check from MI and the person I communicate with has a MA area code (508) 257-3119. I deposited the check, it went through. Now I am supposed to withdraw the money in order to purchase software to do the job. I found it odd to 'pay' someone in cash for software. I asked about the Vendor and the person evaded to answer. She texted, so that is how I got the phone number. I did not give her my phone number. Has anyone come across this?
Mel, Can you email me all your information that you may have on these individuals. Was the check from Vashaalkumar Patel in Big Bear, MI? My brother was bilked out of 3,700+ recently and I want to know more information that you can give me so I can provide to the FBI.
Sounds like a scam to me. Don't spend any of the funds the bank put in your account. Do not send any money or buy anything for anyone you do not know.. If you received this check in the US mail, make sure you go down to your local post office and have the postal inspectors look at it. This could be mail fraud.
You described a fake check scam. See: http://www.fraud.org/scams/general-fraud/fake-check-scams
This is a scam. He sends a job offer as described above. A check is sent asking that you deposit it and withdraw the funds and deposit the money in another account only to have the check bounce and your out the money. I tried reporting it but got no where
