I received the exact same call. They called my phone under an "unknown number" five times in a row. Then it stopped. Two hours later they called and left the same message many received; this was my "final" notice, I was being sued (yet the automated message never specified whom was actually being sued), and they left me a number to return the call. However, they are now using a different number!!! Very similar but different last four; 509.295.6816 <<<<
I received a female-recorded voicemail on my answering machine at 11:48 am today to call to get more information about this case file, to call immediately 509-295-4458 because the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me. No idea who this is (scam?) or what this is about.
I'm guessing scam because isn't all correspondence from the IRS sent via mail? I just know I'm not calling the number back.
I received a call from 509-295-4458. The caller id said 'anonymous' - never a good sign... I never answer calls from numbers I don't know. This is the voicemail that was left.
"Please call immediately on our department number 509-295-4458. I repeat 509-295-4458. Thank you."
That's the entire message. I didn't get the threats of an IRS, as other commenters above. I suspect that because this was a recording, the recording started as soon as the voicemail answered, but before the voicemail started recording. So the beginning of their message was cut off.
This is obviously a scam. The IRS would never contact anyone like this; with a generic, recorded message!! This isn't even a GOOD scam! I hope no one falls for this crap.
I’m an Enrolled Agent with the IRS (Inactive). IRS does not initiate contacts by phone. US mail only. IRS does not file lawsuits. Court action, if any is handled by the DOJ and all parties are entitled to legal assistance if it is a criminal matter. But--tax disputes are for the most part civil matters. 90% of all IRS tax disputes are settled administratively. IRS has absolutely no authority to call on local law enforcement for anything. Local law is never involved in IRS tax disputes. IRS does not threaten to involve local law enforcement or to arrest you for nonpayment of federal taxes. IRS has no powers of arrest. If LE is necessary, US Marshals do the job. IRS does not cold call anyone and demand immediate payment of money. IRS does not ask for financial information over the phone. IRS does not accept Green card money paks for payment in any case. No one is prosecuted for ordinary tax disputes. IRS has absolutely no authority over anyone's professional license. Professional licensing is handled by state governments. Yes, levies on property to satisfy an existing tax obligation do occur, but only after a very long period of negotiation. And yes, liens are placed on individuals but usually after a lot of negotiation and a failure to reach a settlement. All determinations of tax liability are subject to appeals. All contacts by the IRS are initiated by US mail.
Someone from this number called my father and said that the IRS was suing him. I called the number back and someone with a middle eastern accent answered the phone "Hello IRS". When I said that this was a scam he cursed at me, I cursed back and he hung up. Total scam.
