Received a postcard via USPS indicating that I had a parcel waiting for me. It is designed to appear to be an official government form. The postcard lists (512) 593-4111 as the number to call to release my parcel. There are a few fraud indicators here. 1. False Attribution - The postcard creator attempts to appear official. The likely intent is to create an undeserved air of authority in the hopes that the receiver will call in based on that perceived authority. 2. Sense of Scarcity. The postcard states "Final Notice" and call "Within (3) Days". This is intended to make the recipient feel that the item is important and that there is a deadline to meet. There are plenty more indicators but these are the ones that touch on the psychology of the fraud.
