I'm not talking about avoiding debt if a person legitimately owes. But people have the right to have the debt validated to make sure they make payments to the correct company who is entitled to collect the debt. They also have the right to have the debt collector follow the law. Not sure why you seem so ignorant of the provisions of the FDCPA ("even if this were true...") - really? I didn't know that federal law was, as you put it, "fantasy land". Only a shill who tries to scam people into paying debts they do not owe would say such nonsense.
They called me as well. They claim to be a legal firm called Smith & Travis, but they seem like a low budget collection agency that tries to harass family and friends of people that might have debt with them. Lots of yelling and threats, basically the scum of the earth type people. I hope one day they find a real career.

I just got served with a summons. Attached to it was the card member agreement, some statements and a copy of a letter they supposedly sent me on December 30, 2011 saying they purchased the account. Can they wait over a year from sending the letter to sue me or do they have to send a fresher letter? What do I do next?
