Got a call from sgt fortune from the Woolridge police dept nr.514-549-5126 stating that my grandson had been stopped in cn. for a broken taillite among other things needed 4850.00 to get a border release bailbond. Completely false definately a scam. Sounded real even let me talk to someone that I thought was my grandson, but the longer they talked the more the story got weeker, anyway did not fall for it..This happened on 9/02/2011

Got a call on 17 Oct 2011 from someone asking "do you know who this is"?  I guessed my grandson's name.  Crying, he said he was in jail, but innocent.  Said his friends brother had given them a ride, and they got pulled over for speeding.  The brother had drugs in the car that ny grandson was unaware of.  They had given him a drug test and he was clean.   All he needed was a $5,500 bond + $400 handling fee, so that he could appear at a hearing  where he would be found innocent and released.  He had a Sgt Jacob Winters call back to explain the situation.  Winters said that going thru a US bail bondsman or the US Embasy would take from one week to 1 month for release.   However, with an imediate money transfer thru western union he would be released within the day. Transfer would be handled thru the Santo Dimigo, US Embasy charity division.  Since transfers can't be sent to a building or place I should wire directly to Farah Orelain, Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Then call back to verify the transfer.  I was told not to call my grandson's parents since my grandson wanted to tell them face to face when he got home.

Woodridge contact telephone --  #1877 242-0435.  Had me give them my cell phone number.

A lot more details but some didn't add up.  Checked various sources, and couldn't verify that a Woolridge police Department existed in Onterio, Canada.

Called parents - they checked - grandson was in class.

Husband's aunt got a call on 10/19/2011 supposedly from her grandson, saying he was in jail in Canada and needed $3,500 in the form of a money order, in time for a 10/20/2011 court appearance.  My husband called the number (NOT THE 514-549-5126 NUMBER ABOVE), but it was a toll free:  1-877-360-1497.  (Since when does a police department have a toll-free #?)  Man answering stated it was the Woolridge Police Department, and claimed Sargeant John Nash (the person who contacted the aunt) would not be in for another 15 minutes.  Husband immediately called the grandson's mother, and found he was NOT IN CANADA.  He was in school, at home, and all was well.  It was not until my husband's aunt's daughter (mother of the grandson) called her mother (husband's aunt) telling her the grandson was o.k. and at home, that the aunt would accept the fact that this was a scam.  Up until that point, she insisted she had actually talked to her grandson on the phone, and that the request for money was legitimate.  I work in a retirement community, and I was familiar with this scam because the same thing happened to one of our residents last year.  Will report this to the Attorney General in our state.  BE CAREFUL PEOPLE!  THIS IS ONLY ONE OF MANY DIFFERENT SCAMS INVOLVING THE ELDERLY WE SEE AT MY WORK!  DON'T FALL FOR IT - AND BE SURE TO DO YOUR DUE DILIGENCE TO FIND OUT THE TRUTH.  ASK SPECIFIC QUESTIONS OF THE SUPPOSED GRANDSON; THINGS A STRANGER WOULD NOT KNOW - SUCH AS FAMILY HISTORY, ETC.  THAT'S THE BEST WAY TO AVOID BEING A VICTIM.

Boston Mass
Same thing happened in suburb of Boston, Massachusetts.  They called my mother and gave similar story about not calling his mom (her daughter) and needed money to get released from being held by Police in Canada. He was there with friends attending a funeral and they stopped the car they were in and one of his friends had drugs on him.  My mother had them call me and I was almost convinved the person on the phone was my nephew and it was legit until I started doing a little due diligence which led me to this blog.  Thanks folks.
