Folks, you should NEVER, EVER, do either of the following when a call from an unrecognized number comes in to your phone:
1. Answer the phone.
2. Worse yet, answer the phone, then press whatever number they tell you to press to stop the calls.
All that doing either of these things does is to confirm to the sorry scum who are calling that your phone number is an active phone number. All that results in is that your number will be passed along to ADDITIONAL scum or even SOLD to other scum as an ACTIVE number. The VERY best thing you can do is to record those "this phone is disconnected" tones from the internet and place them at the beginning of your answering machine message. That way their predictive dialing computers will record the fact that your phone is DEAD and that alone will remove you from their list.
99% of these [***] use predictive dialers and no human being comes on the line until a computer determines that the phone has been answered by a living human being. If the computer detects the disconnect tone, then it takes you off of their list of live numbers, hangs up, and moves on to the next number.
