a) I got a call from a Police officer from County, mentioning that there was a fraud detected in my account and a legal case has been filed against me. He gave me a contact from IRS with number and asked me to call immediately. This was the contact name and number : Steven white Contact number: 516 586 2212
I googled it later online and many others got call from this number and seem to be fake: http://800notes.com/Phone.aspx/1-516-586-2212
b) After the first call, I quickly called the given number and the person on the another side after providing some basic details started saying that there is discrepancy found in my tax filing from last 3 years and three legal charges have been filed again me, which may lead of seizing of my property, 5 years in jail and many more.
c) He told that he can help me settle the things otherwise there will be a police arrest.
d) I asked him some details on the proof of case filing and he gave me one case number - 20607985BM, and he mentioned that the same can be checked with local police department.
e) When saying that I am sure that there was no mistake from my side on tax filing and upon investigating more on the case, he disconnected the call and said that Police may arrest e anytime.
Got recorded message to contact IRS Department @ 516-5862212. Ha Ha Ha, I know IRS only contacts via mail and I know where the letter would come from. Had call before I know it is Scam.
Guy with an Indian accent answered "Internal Revenue Service"... I said I'm returning a call, then he asked what phone number. I said that I have multiple phone numbers forwarded to one phone. Well, I never got disconnected so fast!
I may call again just to see how long I can SCAM them!
Called cell phone which I don't give out so I called back. Male with reasonably "American" accent answered and said "IRS. Can I help you?" so I said "This is my cell phone. Please don't call my cell phone. It's not an appropriate number to call." and he said (now in an oddly more accented voice - perhaps previously it was a scripted and practiced line?) "Fu** you! Good-bye!" and hung up. I guess it wasn't the IRS, eh? I found a voice message had been left on my phone with a robotic female voice saying "... this case number. Please call the IRS at 516- 585 - 2212 immediately." I hope this scam doesn't catch elderly or otherwise vulnerable people because though there was no moment of doubt on my part, it's a much better done scam than the usual and might well dupe some folks. I simply do not see why phone numbers like this one cannot be suspended once they have been reported and verified as being used for a scam. It should be a simple, simple case - verifiable it is Not the IRS, verifiable that's what they are saying, and Poof. Number disconnected. It's as though our FCC does not care about our more vulnerable citizens. End of rant... thanks!
