This is a total scam. I've been contacted twice by this organization. Each time, I've spoke to a nice woman named "Jeanie," who explains that I've been selected by their editors to appear in a "Who's Who" publication of top attorneys. I tell her I'm flattered. She then proceeds to ask me questions like "How long have you been practicing law?" and "Where did you go to law school?" Hmm. This is basic information that is readily available on the internet, Jeanie. I'm starting to wonder exactly what it was that led your editors to select me for this prestigious honor. "They don't share that information with me. But they've been at this for over 35 years." Really? You'd think that, after 35 years, they'd tell you why you were calling somebody. But, hey, 35 year is a long time. Clearly they know what they're doing. Tell me more, Jeanie!
Then we get to the good part. Jeanie starts to list off packages, which start at $999 for Platinum. With that, you get prominent placement in the book, your name is guaranteed to appear on the first page of Google search results and you even get a bronze eagle statue! If you say no, Jeanie moves to the gold, then silver, then bronze, and so on. If you say you don't want a package at all, Jeanie tells you indignantly that your name will appear "in the back of the book." (Gasp)
Bottom line: if you've been chosen for a prestigious honor in the legal profession, the person calling will be able to tell you why. This is a marketing scam, that has somehow co-opted the "Who's Who" name. But, if you speak with them, please give my regards to Jeanie.
Telemarketer. They try and fake you out by saying that you were nominated for this or that and ask you very basic questions. Even if you answer the questions in a way that would tend to go against the thing they nominated you for.... it does not matter.... you will pass and be nominated. That was the bait, then comes the switch. To get your nomination and then all the goodies they say come with, then you have to open your wallet. You know the Gold level at $999 or the Silver at $499 etc. Total scam. I do not know if the bait & switch game is illegal in New York (where this call originates), but it is here in California.
Received a call from this number saying that we are featured in their publication and Kathleen Lamberti (extension 107) can only speak with the attorney. He needs to approve the info. We asked to be sent a copy of whatever they had but they can only deal with the attorney--not the staff that handles all the advertising!!
Caller said they were from "Top Attorneys of North America" and I hung up. My number is on the do not call list. That hasn't helped much. It follows the pattern of hitting me up for advertising.
Scammers. If you're a top attorney, you'll be nominated by your peers or through your bar association. Do not rely on these types of publications to tell you whether someone is a good lawyer or not. Ask for recommendations from friends and colleagues.
