Received a total of 13 calls last Friday from the same man and woman with accents but from different numbers, wanting to send their "annual report to the IT director in the manufacturing environment." I told them repeatedly that company policy dictated sending the information via standard mail, not email, nor could they speak with anyone. It became so bad that I finally advised the woman that she and her associate would be reported to Security if they phoned again and to remove our number from their records. She backed down quickly, so let's see what happens. The numbers were:
480-257-7028
480-264-0623 (two)
480-327-6806
480-389-1437
520-265-8472
520-265-8582
520-265-8739 (three)
520-366-3116 (two)

My experience is similar to Weary Operator. Callers--both male and female--have slight accents (perhaps Filipino). They ask to be transferred to a co-worker they mentioned by name believe is the "Director of IT Security." They never identify themselves or leave their contact information. Probably 8-10 calls in the last two weeks from these numbers:
520-366-3116
858-703-4798
I'm listing this as telemarketer, but I'm not entirely certain that's the case...I would expect a telemarketer to ask me for another name of someone in the company they could call to sell their products. Possible debt collector...?
They asked for a random name, someone who doesn't/has never worked here. I told them that I do not have a person with that name in my employee directory. They then asked if this was ______. Yes it was. Then they asked to be transferred to the Head of IT. dingdingding! Fake call. I automatically transferred to the VM of someone that is on leave, and not in IT. No way will I transfer you to the head of IT, spammer.
There is a bunch of noise in the background, sounds like a call center.
They want the direct email of the IT person because they are going phishing, and probably trying to get an exploit-laden attachment opened. This is because the IT director usually has full access to all the company computers. Having remote access to the IT director's compromised computer would give them access to everything on the company computers.
