Got a call about 45 min ago; I didn't answer but tried calling back immediately. Busy signal; message tone, no real message, just "callback number". Research shows it listed to one John Mair in Tucson. Behavior suggests an auto-dialer. This is my fourth scam call this week since I added my phone number to a social media "for account recovery". This, again, suggests they're being hacked or are selling the # and I intend to file complaints to and about them since I've had no trouble with any sort of scam calls for over six months. Seems likely the number is being used or has been sold to a telemarketer, or Mr. Mair has lamentably decided to enter into this scummy profession; it seems like a low-level operation since one gets a busy signal, not a sprightly voice message offering to unsub you from the list or say the mailbox is full.
Most of these calls are dialed totally randomly. There's only a very slim chance your phone number got hacked from the social media site, but then that would be up to you to determine: did you set your privacy to NOT show your phone number? Some social media sites have incredibly complex privacy options and if you don't examine all of them you could be broadcasting a lot more information about yourself than you know.
As for John Mair, his number might have been hijacked by spammers. You're making a lot of assumptions about someone who might be gettng framed by having his phone number hijacked.
They called about 30 minutes ago. Caller ID said call from Tucson. I don't know anyone in Tucson, so I didn't answer. Thanks for letting me know it wasn't important.
Not really. I'm simply reporting what happened, and pointing out a possible variable that changed recently. It appears to have consequences, but it could be coincidence. I rarely post personal information anywhere, and I hesitated about doing that much.
Please refrain from criticizing me and my actions or statements; I'm not the bad guy. The scammers and spammers are. I research as part of my living, and I looked up the number several different ways before posting. It may not be John Mair, and I think I indicated that the number may not be his any more, possibly recently. But the number was at one time assigned to him, and perhaps John Mair might like to know that his name is becoming associated with this scam.
