Received call asked for homeowner by name, then know response only heard beeps like from a phone pad. Attempted to call back, one ring then immediately goes to static. Internet search shows Land Line from Roanoke, Va.
First, legit entity are not "NOT_AVAILABLE" on the caller ID (clue #1). Sounds legitimate as a strong male voice asking for the homeowner by name (clue #2). You think that maybe it is an official or police officer but the voice is very dominate as they want you to feel obligated to donate (clue #3). No way to know who is on the other end and even if they are legit NEVER NEVER NEVER (oh, and NEVER) donate to anyone over the phone. Ask for the information in writing - END OF CONVERSATION and HANG UP. Are they 501(c)(3) or similar IRS approved entity? (clue #4).
If you want to donate to this cause-call your police department directly.
Received cold call from National State Troopers Association. Call cut in and out, like it was on a bad voice over Internet system. Some office like background noise. Caller was very cordial and asked if we would like to support a state trooper survivor fund for slain troopers. Caller started rattling off "package deals" of dollar amounts. I agreed, to see where it went. This caller "handed me off" to another caller who was supposed to get my "information". I asked which organization he represented and he parroted what the first caller stated. I asked which state it was for and the new caller indicated it was "national" from Virginia and all over. I tried stalling by saying I'd never heard of it and I began a search on the Internet for the association. The caller then disconnected the call

Got call, no one on other end. Hung up. Called back. Got "please press 2 if you want your number off our list.". So 2 I pressed. Showed up as "unknown name" on caller id.
