They are spoofing local numbers.  The call originates in either India or Pakistan.  Accent should  be a dead giveaway.

Got one of these today.  Caller ID showed "PRIVATE NAME".   I don't answer calls I don't recognize so it went to Voice mail.  My provider then transcribed it into an email:

"The reason behind this voicemail is to make you aware that we have received some legal petition complaints against your name concerning an illegal tax evasion.  A tax fraud.  So we are about to take this matter to the Federal Claims Court house and we are about to issue a warrant for your arrest.  But before we go ahead and do that, if you need any relevant informations concerning this case you can call us back on our call back number and you can talk to a legal representative. The number to reach us is 571-210-5551. I repeat 571-210-5551. Again this is officer Melvin. You have a good day. Thank you."

Listening to it, there was a fairly think accent-- rep-re-sen-TATE-ive was apparently a struggle.  And "officer Melvin"?  Pretty obviously bogus, but the number must be correct or they'd not be able to get the callback.  Ho-hum.  It's astounding if anyone actually falls for this kind of thing in this day and age.

Got the same message on my phone couple days ago......what a joke!  Like the IRS is going to give me a courtesy call about a warrant for my arrest.  I also got a call (now I know it's probably the same folks) a couple of weeks about about IRS concerns and my tax filing.....some people!  It's that time of the year again and we can't be careful enough.

Threatening call saying he was from "Internal Revenue Services". First clue it was a scam was the plural of "Services".  Clearly an attempt to intimidate someone into giving money. Threatening with arrest warrants etc.

I called IRS info line and they verified this was phony.  So don't fall for it!  Also, report to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at their online site www.tigta.gov. Clic on link to "IRS Impersonation Scam Reporting."
If enough reports they may try to get something going, especially if anyone ends up losing money
