County Sheriff's Office is warning residents to be aware of a tax scam that is targeting the area.
A caller tells victims that they owe money to the Internal Revenue Service and must pay it right away with a wire transfer or pre-loaded debit card, according to a sheriff's office news release.
The would-be victims are threatened with arrest or the suspension of their driver's license if they refuse to cooperate.
In some cases, the caller becomes irate and insulting, the sheriff's office said.
Authorities said the IRS will not ask for credit card numbers over the telephone, or request a pre-paid debit card or wire transfer.
