My number is on the Federal Trade Commission's (FTC) national Do Not Call registry.
Today, November 26, 2008, I received a call from this number - 574-234-2900. My Caller ID displayed the words "Sweepstakes Pro." Without thinking, I made the mistake of picking up the receiver. The automated voice stated that, "We are calling in response to a form you filled out for a free SUV." That is when I hung up the receiver.
EVERY TIME I receive an unwanted solicitous call I report it to the FTC using its online complaint format. I provide the date, time of the call, what Caller ID displayed and the message if there was one on my voice mail. I have decided to let the FTC know that people are tired of unwanted calls.
These companies/individuals know that most people will not complain to the FTC - that is what they are relying on. Thus, they stay under the FTC's radar.
If more people would complain, the FTC will take action against these annoying callers. The FTC does not act on one report alone. It takes many reports before they will take action - but they DO take action if enough citizens complain.
