This number was given as a call back number in a letter saying I had won a second place prize in a lottery. It is purported to be my agent in assisting me in receiving my prize winnings.

Your notice is very similar to my circumstances - a letter saying I have won 2nd place in a PC drawing that I never heard of. It incudes a check for over $6700. Check is from a bank 'FLSmidth' in PA. My name is mis-spelled on the check and it was mailed from Indianapoolis IN. Everything tells me this is a scam.
Any lottery/contest that requires you to phone a number to collect is a BIG problem & red flag. You CANNOT win a contest you never entered. You CANNOT win a lottery you never bought a ticket on. Want the facts? Take the check to your bank. DO NOT deposit it. Give it to them to investigate.
