I went on truecar.com and used them to request quotes from a few dealerships. I inadvertently gave them my cell phone number. That was a mistake because I started getting calls from two dealers on that number, but I figured that wasn't terrible since they were legitimate businesses. I even went and did a test drive at one of the dealers. The next business day I started getting calls from this number as well as 609-755-0579. Looking up the number gave no info and there was no caller ID info.
I eventually answered the call figuring it was somehow related and the person hung up. I called back (blocking my number first) and got a message saying "thank you for returning our call, we have an important matter to discuss with you about your vehicle, please hold for our agent." Well at that point I was pretty sure I had gotten added to some kind of car scam list by going through truecar.com. I ended up speaking with someone eventually and I was half-right.
Apparently the dealer that I test drove at contracts out to a survey company and they gave my cell number the survey company who then proceeded to continuously call me until I took the survey. I told the woman I spoke to to not call my cell number. She said she would make a note of that.
Somewhat ironically they asked me what it would do to get me to buy a car at that dealer. I should have said not give my contact details out to a survey company.
