This number called me three times in one day without leaving a voicemail. Caller ID was out of Princeton NJ. I called them back. The man on the other end was difficult to understand, stated he is an investigator at the department of internal revenue, and asked me if I had received any letters. I said no and he said that there was an issue with my taxes from 2010 to 2015 and whether I used an agency to file or completed my taxes independently. I asked him which year there was an issue, as taxes are filed on a yearly basis and he just restated his previous question and stated that I owe over $5,000. I told him I have copies of my taxes, that there has never been an issue in the past, and never received a letter in the mail. He went off saying a few regulations (no idea if real) and that I have two options; I could setting in court with lawyers or provide the money and stay out of court. Then I asked him where they sent me the letter. He responded with 230 (some street name I could not understand) court. I asked him the state, he said Parkson City. Once again, I asked him the state and he returned with the same street address and city without a state (seemingly contriving a situation in which I disclose my address). Finally, I asked, "what state?" and he said Oregon. I told him that I have never lived in Oregon and have never even been to Oregon (truthfully). The man said "sorry" and quickly hung up!
Thank you everyone who has posted and hopefully these people get caught soon!
This number seems to be a classic fraudulent IRS scam. Called and left a robo-voicemail explaining that the IRS was filing a lawsuit against me. I would love for these lawbreakers to be arrested and jailed but I'm not holding my breath.
The IRS reminds people that they can know pretty easily when a supposed IRS caller is a fake. Here are five things the scammers often do but the IRS will not do. Any one of these five things is a tell-tale sign of a scam. The IRS will never:
Call to demand immediate payment, nor will we call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill..
Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.
Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
dfly IRS scam!!! I blocked this number from my phone. the man I called back from my FAX line @ work, hardly spoke any English, is the IRS outsourcing now??? doubt it!!! how do those people sleep at night...grrrrr!!! losers get a job!
