Received phone message today (heavily accented) ...from Officer Michael Smeet....couldn't understand him much the same as all other messages...something about legal action and to call the same number back....but call display shows government number. Like all scam phone calls...if they can't pronounce a simple name properly....it's usually bogus....."delete."
Received a call in Northern Alberta by a man with heavy East Indian accent. Claimed he has a warrant against me for income tax evasion. Identified himself as Adam Smith. I told him I would call him back and he gave me this number. It is not a number listed for use by Canada Revenue. He wanted my mailing address.
Just got a call from this number. They left a message-his name was officer John Adams. He said that he was calling the CRA and that we had legal action against us. The man had a very heavy Indian Accent. He did not say who he was calling for and he called after 6:30pm (both which I thought was odd). I called back and a man answered it as "Criminal Investigations". I asked for John Adams, but he said that he was not at his desk. I asked what his name was and it was Officer Jason Blake-also a very heavy Indian accent. I asked him how I could verify that it was the CRA, and he said I could look up the CRA number and I would see that it was them. I also pointed out that he sounded a lot like the first guy that called. He said something in an Indian Language and hung up. Total scam.
Receive a message with choppy english saying that he has a warrant for tax fraud and will go to the police and said his name was Officer Jason Blake and told me to call this number.
I received a voicemail from this number. The caller, in an Indian accent, said he was calling from the CRA in connection with a "legal action against my name". When I called back the line was busy. (Since when does a real call to CRA get you a busy signal?) ;-)
Some sort of scam or fraud, I'm sure.
Incidentally, just so know you: whenever CRA does call, they provide the name of the Agent, plus a File Number that you can quote when calling back to the main CRA number. Or they will give you a local office number and a File Number to quote. This will help distinguish genuine calls from those by these fraudsters.
