No! This is a pervasive extortion scam which has bilked thousands out of millions of dollars. Report them to the REAL IRS. Their contact information is provided below:

These are criminal extortionists operating in overseas boiler rooms using VOIP to alter their identities and locations and out of the reach of US law enforcement.

If someone calls saying he's an IRS agent and demands that you send money immediately, hang up.
It's a phone scam.In fact, it tops the IRS "Dirty Dozen" list of tax scams this year, and it's been surging in recent months, the agency said Thursday.

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA), which oversees the IRS, has received reports of 290,000 scam calls since October 2013 and said nearly 3,000 victims have been swindled out of $14 million so far.

By altering their caller ID number to make it look like they're calling from an IRS office, these scammers often threaten vulnerable people like the elderly and new immigrants with things like arrest, deportation or the loss of their driver's license if they don't pay immediately for money purportedly owed.

Often leaving messages that say it's "urgent" you call them back, the scammers use common names and sometimes say they are from the IRS Criminal Division. They may even claim to know the last four digits of your Social Security number and send follow-up emails that appear to be from the IRS, TIGTA said.

They often demand that payments be made by prepaid debit card.

Once they make their threats, the scammers have been known to call back and again disguise their caller ID so it appears they are calling from the police department or the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

Or sometimes when they call, they may say you have a refund due and ask you to provide personal information so you can claim it.

The real IRS will usually contact you by regular mail first, if it needs to contact you at all. And the agency never demands immediate payment by phone or asks for credit card or debit numbers if they do call. It also never asks for personal or financial information by email, text or social media.

If you get what you suspect is a scam call, report it to TIGTA through its Web site or call 800-366-4484.

So my wife gets this call from an Ottawa based number 613-707-7317. The voice is male, has a distinct accent (it's South Asian - I can tell since I am from South Asia), is trying very hard to sound firm and 'official'. The message is designed to scare: "Don;t even try and ignore this call, it will be very bad fro you. You owe Canad Revenue Agency back taxes and if you don't call us and work out an arrangement IMMEDIATELY, you will regret". Today, March 31, 2015, they have called my home a minimum of 5 times. Wife called me at the office, harried and anxious. Fortunately, I did a quick check on the phone number and found that this number has been calling up all over United States and Canada. Is there a local authority in Canada that protects citizens against these scams? If someone has the answer, please post it on this board.

I received the same call...South Asian guy pretending to be a voice recording saying it's the Canadian Revenue Agency and that my file is under investigation blah blah and that they have my Social Insurance Number. So am like oh really what's my social insurance number so the guy kept talking..as though it's a recording and said I need to call them back at that number?  err ya sure.

Can't believe people fall for these scammers.  If anything you would get a legit letter from the CRA in the mail. Not shady phone call. I have reported them to the CRA.

Seriously Do Not Call list is useless. It's only increased the amount of telemarketers and scammer calls.  Burn in hell you low lifes.  Dirty buggers. Police need to do more. A lot more!

Received a call from 613 707 7317 number twice today on March 31,2015. First at 2:05 PM and the caller left a message this message:
" there is a legal case registered on you name under you SIN number and right now you and your SIN is under investigation - don't try to ignore this message  and call 613-707-7317 or you will be arrested.
Got the second call at 2:48 PM. When we picked up the phone, there was an ongoing recording with the same message and no real person.
I reported this number to CRA today.
