Being on it doesn't mean all your nonsense calls will stop, but it should let you know the calls you get are either debt collectors, fundraisers, political calls, surveys, or con artists. Your honest telemarketers are the only ones who abide by the list. Stopping the rest is up to you, which can be done, either with a call blocker/app, or completely ignoring unknown calls if you can. That means no kind of answer on your end. Callers are doing enough homework to use local numbers that might give receivers a better chance to answer.
P.S. I found that my number has been on the do not call list since 2005, and one's registration does not expire. Annoying, since I get nonsense calls constantly. I read that one can report annoyances as such to www.donotcall.gov. I haven't tried this yet but will see if it helps.
