I've had frauds using my local exchange for even longer, usually throwing away each number after one use. Many have been of the credit reprice variety. I've dubbed it the "One Mile Radius" fraud after plotting the house locations of all the spoofed numbers on a map.
wow we have a new tactic. instead of spoofing out of state numbers, they try the first six of your numbers. sorry criminals, if i don't know you i don't pick up. this number isn't worth blocking as it's spoofed and unassigned

Thank you. I had no idea, this is a first for me although i've been getting calls from out of state spoofed numbers at least once a day for about 4 years now. I hope everyone knows better than to be fooled by someone spoofing a local number
I would have sworn there was more than one dedicated thread, but I may have been thinking of crossover discussion under a Mirror Spoof topic or the threads regarding people whose numbers were hijacked by spoofers. Anyway, you should find more observations like yours.

I'd also note that a business can easily purchase a VOIP number in your area. I've seen that cute trick from commercial fundraisers and debt collectors, callers which usually target specific people. It costs but a few dollars for the short time they intend to use the DID. These are strategies presumably in reaction to call blocking and filtering, anything to make a strange number appear "safe" to answer.
