They call family, friends, neighbors and/or places of employment (past or present or both) to create panic and embarrassment so that their intended victim calls them and they can scare that person into paying their extortion money.
Federal law (FDCPA) requires them to send you a letter (US MAIL ONLY) postmarked within 5 days of their first contact that contains their name, physical address, the creditor’s name, and the amount of the alleged debt. It also must contains “mini-Miranda” telling you that it is an attempt to collect a debt and that all information will be used for those purposes. The one other important thing that this letter must also have in it is that you have a right to dispute the debt within 30 days of receipt of the letter and if you do so, all collection activity must be stopped until the debt is verified.

I have been calls from so many of these places lately. I don't get why, but I've had to block at least 5 different phone numbers, this one being one of them. One of them tried calling both my father and my husband to "threaten" action against me. As I watch my credit and finances like a hawk since experiencing identity thief, I know for a fact that I don't owe anyone that isn't on my list.
My mother gets a call from this number. It said this message is from the offices of Retrieval Mediation Services. It stated that a serious matter concerning my personal information was placed with their office and that they needed a statement from me or my attorney if I have one quickly to release me from this matter. I then receive a call from them but didn't answer. This is definitely a scam.
