I had a machine voice mail that the IRS had called. Called back and a very rude young man claiming to be Phillip Edwards, Investigating Officer, Badge #171978 told me that marshalls were on the way to cuff and take me to jail because of my frauding the IRS. He had my legal name and my mailing address, but the wrong street address. I began to ask more questions and he got more rude and angry. He said to be cooperative when the marshalls arrive and hung up. First, I am a retired government investigator who worked closely with the IRS. NEVER in my experience would such a rude uncooperative threatening person approach a real subject of fraud like this. Second, I live in Texas. Why would a SO. California IRS office be contacting me? Doesn't the TX local IRS have jurisdiction? Third, this is the first I heard of this. The IRS generally has a procedure of working with citizens to resolve such issues first, prior to jumping to the arrest phase of an IRS case. Fourth, the so called fraud was based on the use of my legal name. He said there is a suit out there claiming fraud by me due to my using my legal name, that an audit by the IRS dated from 2010. Why would the IRS send me my 2016 tax refund if they really had an investigation on me? I called them back and someone with a different voice answered. When I asked for Phillip Edwards, she said "this is him ". I told her/him I know they are committing a scam and I would be properly reporting them to the IRS and FBI.
