This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.
ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:
these people are crazy they call me everyday all day telling me the gonna sue me for a debt from 2000 wtf seriously telling me they are trying to get me served for a court date lmao i keep telling them to stop calling me but yet the continue to call
This man name Brian Anderson left me a message saying he was serving me with some papers within 24 hrs if i didn't return his message, and even my employment, i decided to return the call with a code he left as well, he wanted me to get a prepaid card because i said i didn't trust him to give him my debit card info to give payments for an old debt i have. He said i have 24 hrs to get one and call him back or they will pursue with the law suit and i will be served with papers to show up in court. Something wasn't right so i googled the numbers he gave me to call back and sure enough iv'e seen several people getting scammed with these type of calls. I hope these people pay for their wrong doing.
